The Music of Kali

The Music of Kali is a live music performance using the music composition coming from and inspired by Kali, the interdisciplinary artwork. The works is presented within the interactive stage design of Kali, adorned with media art and projection mapping.

Following the success of Kali performance on 1 March 2014 in Yogyakarta – Indonesia, there was an idea to tour Kali nationally and internationally. However, the fact that Kali is a big size artwork with a big cast member is becoming a strength point but also becoming an obstacle to tour. To overcome this situation, there was an idea to take the music and the media art as an independent work; this is the idea where The Music of Kali project was born.

As an interdisciplinary art, Kali consists of several art elements. Each element can stand by itself or being combined with others or presented as a full blown work. Within this idea, The Music of Kali will combine the music and the media art component.

The music of The Music of Kali is based on Javanese ethnic percussion (gamelan) mixed with kuntulan and kendang kempul from Banyuwangi, East Jawa and imbued with electronica.

The foundation of empire is art and science. Remove them or degrade them, and the empire is no more. Empire follows art and not vice versa as Englishmen suppose.
